Fly fishing in September can be great if you know how to choose locations, and read the conditions.
Heavy rains can make for murky water, and scattered fish on the move.
Try these suggestions to get you back in the game.
In freshwater lakes, look for knee deep, newly flooded flats near vegetation, and or slight drop offs. Keep a look out for waking Largemouths.
This can be a great place to jump out of the boat and present Frog, and Baitfish imitations. Stop and start retrieves on the frog, and straight retrieves on the Baitfish Patterns, can draw Bass from long distances.
Matching the prevalent bait and flies that push water are king.
My second suggestion for both the Fresh, and the Salt is to target "run offs". These occur when small creeks, ditches, and culverts, cascade into a larger body of water.
A variety of lure styles will catch a variety of both salt and freshwater species such as, Largemouth, Snook, Cyclids, Mangrove Snapper, Tarpon and much more.
Topwater poppers and "match the hatch" water pushing flies as well as sinking versions can score here.
Hope this helps, and don't forget that we are planning to do some tying classes at the end of September, Early October, at our store in Dade City Florida.

]]>There is no doubt that Camping in Florida can be WILD! With the nearly year round mild weather in Florida and nearly unlimited activities available to enjoy outdoors there are some things you should know before you head out.
Florida’s Ever Changing Weather
While winter and spring provide many near perfect sunny days, the temperatures can fluctuate by over 40 degrees in just hours as the cold northern fronts come through. Summer weather brings even more drastic changes in Florida and is often unpredictable. Staying on top of weather forecasts is paramount! Because of demand, often camping reservations have to be made months in advance leaving your outing to rely on chance when it comes to the weather. Educating yourself on Florida's weather patterns will help you to avoid some of the nastier weather situations, but being prepared for anything will go a long way to helping you enjoy your trip:
Know About Hurricane Season
Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, with the most active months typically being August through October. Plan accordingly and check cancellation policies t campgrounds in reference to your deposit. Closely monitor local weather stations and watch any developing systems or storms. Take evacuation notices seriously!
Take Cover During Thunderstorms
Summer in Florida brings almost daily rains, we are in the tropics. In this area thunderstorms often produce a lot of lightning. Lightening before, during and after a thunderstorm requires its own set of outdoor safety tips
You are in the strike zone if you are within 30 seconds of seeing and hearing a burst of lightning. Make sure you take cover in this instance until storm passes.
Avoid being in or on beaches, lakes and other bodies of water. Try to get to a shelter quickly if you see a storm approaching and avoid trees and tall objects as they will be a possible “target” for the lightning. Your safest place is indoors or if you have to inside of a vehicle (convertible’s don’t count).
Always pack appropriate rain gear. For a full selection of quality “Florida Proof” rain gear shop our online store!
Orvis Pack and Go Travel Jacket - Designed for a lifetime of adventure, the stain-, wind-, and water-resistant Pack-And-Go Travel Jacket keeps you dry
ENO ProFly Rain Tarp Black - Want sound, foul-weather protection, but not looking for a bomb shelter? Step under the ProFly.
Kuhl Skull Cap - Wind and water resistant.
Hot and Cold Precautions in Florida
Everyone thinks about the hot, humid days of summer when planning outings here. Yes, the heat and humidity will suck the enjoyment of the outdoors right out of you if you are not prepared with the correct clothing and hydration. Consider “wicking clothing” that will pull the moisture away from your skin making you feel dryer and cooler. Also clothing with SPF (sun protection factor) built in will help you from having to grease up with sun block over and over each day. Breathable hats will keep the direct sun off your head and face, providing a welcome shade effect.
Orvis Tech Chambray Shirt - The Tech Chambray Work Shirt features mechanical stretch, quick-dry fabric. Lightweight and wicking
Orvis Guide Convertible Pant - Quick-dry stretch fabric and articulated knees offer a full range of motion for any outdoor activity from fishing to hiking while UPF 50 helps prevent sunburn and sun damage.
Tilley LTM6 Airflow Hat - Maximum sun protection – fabric is certified UPF 50+, the highest given Air flow
The months of December through February are known in Central and North Florida to bring in waves of very cold temperatures dipping down into the freezing zone. Coupled with the winds and rains that typically precedes the cold fronts an unprepared camper could be left out in the cold and risk hypothermia if also wet. Paying attention to weather fronts that are always on the move and packing the correct equipment to stay warm and dry are very important in the winter months in Florida.
"It always rains on tents. Rainstorms will travel thousands of miles, against prevailing winds for the opportunity to rain on a tent." – Dave Berry, author
Spring Awakens the Insects
North and Central Florida get a break from the bugs in the winter months and even in South Florida they “die back” a bit. Insect issues are a small price to pay for the nearly perfect Florida weather – if you prepare in advance to deal with them.
Wear clothing treated with repellent:
Insect Shield® Advantages Insect Shield® technology converts clothing and gear into effective, long lasting and convenient insect protection.
Insect Shield Versatile Wrap , Insect shield socks , Buff Coolnet UV Insect Shield , Orvis Outsmart Apparel
Don’t forget your pet w/ Buff Dog Insect Shield
Make sure any exposed skin is also treated
Know your bloodsuckers, these are the most common:
Mosquito – There are over 80 varieties of mosquito in Florida, all the females will bite and bites will itch, some cause more irritation than others. The most common issue with mosquitoes in Florida is the viral encephalitis viruses they carry and transmit
Ticks - Ticks are small bloodsucking parasites. Many species transmit diseases to animals and people like Lyme disease. Some ticks are so small that they can be difficult to see.
Redbugs (Chiggers) - Chiggers are found in tall grass and weeds. Their bite causes severe itching that can last up to 2 weeks. Chiggers bite humans around the waist, ankles, or in warm skin folds. Bites commonly occur in the summer and fall months.
No-See Um’s - Also referred to as Biting Midges, Biting Gnats, Punkies or Sand Flies. They are so small they can get through screens on windows and doors. Besides causing painful bites they also can transmit diseases
How then do you prevent getting bit by these pests? Do everything you can and there is a lot of options available!
Florida put the wild in “wildlife”
Many folks looking for outdoor experiences are eager to see the wide variety of wildlife that call Florida home including Manatee, Panthers, Black Bear, & Alligators. Though some of the wildlife you will experience most likely will be raccoons, rabbits, squirrels, snakes, tortoises, fox, skunks, and armadillos. There is a very large variety of native and migrating birds as well that will surely please visitors. You are not likely to see Burmese Pythons, Tegu, Iguana or Rhesus Macaque monkeys unless you are specifically searching them out.
Use Common Sense when Encountering Wildlife
It is frightening to witness people getting a too close for comfort to wild animals. It is not uncommon for people to try and feed deer or to try and get a selfie with a bear (or even worse turn their back on an alligator for selfie) to post to social media for all of our friends to see. Not only are these occurrences a hazard for our personal safety but it also poses a threat to wildlife.
As a wild animal becomes habituated to the presence of humans, a distinct shift in their actions will occur.

A final word must be given to venomous snakes of Florida. Take time to learn to identify these snakes and keep your distance from them at all times.

Cycling Changes Your Brain and Makes You Mentally Stronger
Cycling can grow your brain in the same way it can grow your muscles. When we cycle, the blood that flows to the muscles increases this allows our bodies to build more capillaries, supplying more blood (and therefore more oxygen) to those muscles. The same process actually occurs in our brains. Cycling allows our cardiovascular system to grow further into our brains, bringing them more oxygen and nutrients that can improve its performance.
When we ride our bikes, our brains also increase their production of proteins used for creating new brain cells. By biking regularly, we actually double (or even triple) new cell production in our brains! It also increases neurotransmitter activity, allowing the regions of our brain to communicate more effectively; therefore, improving our cognitive abilities.

Why cycling is good for weight loss, physical fitness, legs and mind
A study by the YMCA showed that people who had a physically active lifestyle had a well being score 32 per cent higher than inactive individuals.
There are so many ways that exercise can boost your mood: there’s the basic release of adrenaline and endorphins, and the improved confidence that comes from achieving new things (such as completing a sportive or getting closer to that goal).
Cycling combines physical exercise with being outdoors and exploring new views. You can ride solo – giving you time to process worries or concerns, or you can ride with a group which broadens your social circle.

Going for a ride is good for your heart and muscles, and it may improve how you walk, balance, and climb stairs.
They say you never forget how to ride a bike, so maybe it's time to climb aboard a two- or three-wheeler and enjoy the health benefits of cycling. "It's socially oriented, it's fun, and it gets you outside and exercising," says Dr. Clare Safran-Norton, a physical therapist at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital.

]]>When the temperature goes down, so do the fish as they search for comfort and food.
Snook, speckled trout, Tarpon, jacks, ladyfish, sheepshead, mangrove snapper and others will be available in the thermal refuge of residential canals with mud bottoms, freshwater springs, rivers and creeks.
During warm ups, redfish are typically the first to brave the skinny flats and the rest will follow. Think about offering mullet, baitfish and shrimp patterns. When targeting the Nature Coast, consider throwing weedless flies around the numerous rocks and oyster crossings.
It may be slow fishing at first, but the action will eventually come around as the sun progresses. Keep an eye out for birds, as they stalk or dive on bait fish. Sometimes, a light ripple will signal the presence of bait.
Sometimes, it’s good to downsize your flies in cold water.
One of the challenges for the fly fisher, is covering a lot of water to locate fish.
Don’t be afraid to use your spinning and bait casting equipment to find fish. Zara Spook and spoons are a great way to start.
Once you sense that you’re in the correct area, then break out the fly gear.
Ignore your offerings. On most days, they will eventually eat, though. Both top water poppers or subsurface bait patterns can work.
Here’s a tip for Newbies!
Use small Clouser type flies, in size 1 or 2, to target mangrove snapper. Chartreuse is a good color to start with. Use a fair amount of flash too. Often, Juvenile “Mango’s” will attack small flies with a vengeance! They tend to be be small, at around 8 inches, but put up a decent fight. It’s a great opportunity to perfect your casting, retrieval methods, hook set, etc.
Rock shorelines that drop off fairly quickly to 4 or 5 feet are perfect. When you get your casting down, try your luck at casting around and under docks. Rocks and oysters will up your chances.
I highly recommend tying your own flies to up your enjoyment factor! Need a lesson or fly tying materials we have a large in store stock, stop on by the retail store in Dade City!

Note: this list is for day hikes only up to about 10 – 12 hours. Overnight (multi-day) hikes will require tent/hammock, supplies, food, etc, so you would have to expand this list unless taking a guided hike where the equipment is provided for you.

Kuhl Kollusion Jacket (For colder climates as necessary)

It is vital to bring along layers for your hike. A typical day can start cool in the morning; get rather warm midday, a chilly windy afternoon with possible showers, and cool evenings. You never know what “mother nature” will send your way – even with the most dependable weather forecast.
Never wear cotton on the trail as cotton absorbs moisture and that can is never comfortable and can be dangerous. Always opt for dri fit or moisture wicking fabrics.
Hiking Shoes
You will need a sturdy pair of hiking shoes. We have seen pretty difficult trails hiked in street shoes, but we do not recommend for safety over any other reason. Hiking shoes are made for changing terrain and tend not to slip when needed.
Consider the amount of support you need (if you need to support/protect your ankles)and if waterproof option is necessary or desired.

Services Over Products
In the next year and beyond, we will see a move from selling products to providing services around the products we offer. We have found that many of our clients, particularly young people, are moving away from consumerism. Figuring out new ways to sell consumers new versions of products they already have is no longer a good business. We want the name Flint Creek Outfitters to be on the mind and in the memories of the best experiences you can have in 2020.
Adventures
In November 2019 we launched Flint Creek Bike Rentals ensuring everyone had access to one of our local treasures – the Withlacoochee Trail. Also in 2019, we rekindled our relationship with Not a Clue Adventures to bring you monthly opportunities to get out with a group and experience local adventures. In January FCO will be assisting in outfitting and planning an early March trip into the Grand Canyon.
We look forward to offering you more in the months to come. From hiking trips throughout the southeast, to fly fishing inland and off the coast of Florida and the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia. We are in the process of putting together guided bike trips as well.
Learning More in 2020
For year we have offered Fly Fishing 101 and 201 classes as well as Fly Tying. In 2020 we will be offering additional opportunities to learn new skills. Classes on bike maintenance, outdoor cooking, & tent repair are just a few of the ideas in the works
Rental Services to Expand
In addition to Bike Rentals, in mid 2020 we will have additional outdoor gear rental packages coming available. Fly Fishing, Camping and Backpacking gear will be made available, later in the year, for single and multi day adventures. Each kit will be available with the items most needed for your adventure without the need to purchase, store or maintain on your own.
We want to thank you for being a client and friend of Flint Creek Outfitters and we look forward to hearing your feedback on our new offerings and on items you think would be a good fit for our location!
Sincerely wishing you’re a great 2020

]]>Now that we’ve had a few cold fronts, the action is really beginning to pick up. As we experience the transition to late fall patterns and warmer than usual weather, finding snook, redfish, and speckled trout becomes much easier.
Redfish action will continue to improve as the temperatures drop. Look for the brutes on the flats in larger schools ranging between 10 to 100 fish actively feeding on crabs, shrimp, marine worms, and baitfish. This can help narrow down your fly selection to Merkins, Kwans, Muddlers, and Clousers. Natural color schemes relating to tannic clear water such as dark browns and blacks are my go-to’s at this time. Long stealthy casts are necessary to attack these schools. Begin by targeting the edges of these schools to avoid spooking the whole group.
Snook are active, moving to their wintertime haunts of the backwater creeks and inland rivers. Look for these fish cruising mangrove shorelines and shallow flats with potholes, a perfect ambush point for these predatory geniuses. With large amounts of glass minnows, a small thin baitfish, try tossing a large streamer or mullet pattern. Flies with chartreuses, whites, and purples will tend to draw the attention of snook.
With cooler weather and closed seasons, trout are making an amazing comeback and returning to their usual stomping grounds. For larger sized “gators”, look for shallow flats with good water flow and large amounts of bait. Try using mullet flies, poppers, and gurglers to draw some vicious strikes from these aggressive fish.
Gabe Littlefield is a kayak fishing guide, specializing in fly fishing for flats species such as redfish, snook, tarpon, and speckled trout. If you’d like to try your hand at kayak fly fishing, book your trip with Gabe.

]]>Here are some tips you will want to pay attention to before attempting this hike:
You have to obtain a permit!
If you wish to camp anywhere in the park, other than in developed campgrounds on the North Rim or the South Rim, you must obtain a permit from the Backcountry Information Center. Make certain to add an alternate itinerary and alternate dates when making the application.
Prepare for the physical part of the hike – This hike will challenge your legs and your lungs. No matter how experienced you are as a hiker, you will encounter challenges on this hike. Start preparing in advance with cardio training. Work on your legs by biking 3 times a week or doing weighted squats, lunges or walking lunges in the gym. Strengthen and protect you knees and ankles! Plan on taking twice as long to hike up out of canyon as it took to hike down into the canyon. Allow 1/3 of your time to descend and 2/3 of your time to ascend. As a courtesy, give uphill hikers the right of way. Bring a small, lightweight flashlight in case you end up hiking in the dark.
Prepare with the right equipment for the hike - Travel as light as possible. The heaviest items in your pack should be food and water. Use hiking sticks to take stress off your legs. Wear well-fitting and broken-in hiking boots. Bring a small lightweight flashlight and a change of batteries and bulb. Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. Bring a map, compass, signal mirror or whistle, first aid kit, and water purification tablets. Keep in mind that all trash (including biodegradable) needs to be carried out of the canyon. The weather can change without warning and temperatures in the canyon are often very different than up on the rim.
Note: Camping vs. a stay at Phantom Ranch requires additional preparation. Cottonwood Camp, for example, has poles to hang your back packs (make sure your gear can hang on posts or mice will drive you crazy – all gear and food needs to be hung on metal posts
Plan for the season of your hike – Late spring is the best time to plan your hike – before the heat of summer sets in. Late fall and spring may require crampons as snow towards the rims will make the trails very slippery.
For full equipment list contact Flint Creek Outfitters!
Below are some fantastic tips from the Grand Canyon website to help you with your hike. For local experienced assistance, stop by the Flint Creek Outfitters store in Dade City. Many of our staff have hiked the Grand Canyon and other location within the USA. You may find their experience and information a valuable tool when planning your hike. They know the gear, the environment and the planning tips to help you have the best experience possible!

Inshore- Reds, Snook, and Tarpon
With the heat beating down us anglers this time of year, it’s pretty frustrating to try to figure out what the fish are up to. The key to success right now is to get out on the water around sunrise or sunset, or both if you’re lucky! Look for areas with structure such as grass flats, potholes, oyster bars, and mangroves. Gurglers and streamers work well when paired up with an 8-wt Helios 3 Rod.
If you’re after tarpon, look for juveniles in the backwaters. Creek mouths, swamps, and outflows are all good places to look. For these guys, the smaller the fly the better. Most saltwater patterns in a size 4 or 6 work well. As for the large tarpon, look to the beaches and north flats toward Homosassa and Crystal River.
Freshwater- Big Bass and Bluegill If you’re like me and have a crazy summer schedule between vacations, work, parties, and other needs that require your time, you can’t always make it out to the salt. So, to meet my fly fishing need, I load up my kayak and hit one of the hundreds of lakes, ponds, creeks, and rivers that surround us. Small popping bugs and streamers can land you some nice bluegills and shellcrackers this time of year, along with the occasional crappie. Work these around structure such as cypress knees, wood, weed lines, and lily pad edges.
For some big Largemouth Bass, get out early before it warms up to much and fish a weedless hair bug near cover like grass, pads, and brush. As the day progresses, start working out toward the deeper parts of where you’re fishing. A clouser or crawfish fly works well under these conditions.
Feel free to stop by our Dade City location or give us a call to chat with me and ask questions! I’m always happy to help.
Thank you for reading this report.
Tight lines,
Gabe Littlefield

]]>My Name is Colton Green, and I’m a photographer and Fly fisherman from Dade City, Florida
The purpose of this blog is to share my journey as I fish with Captain Al Dopirak and his client Dr. Brian Tang from the month of June. Brian is here to try and break the current world record for a tarpon in the 8lb fly category. Brian has been doing this for almost 30 years and has come very close in the past, hopefully we get it done this year. My purpose for being on the boat is pretty simple, I’m there to drive the boat once brian hooks up to faish, that way Captain Al can focus on brain the fish and doesn’thave to worry about controlling the boat. Most of the time I’m just sitting around looking for fish, so that’s when i get to break out the camera and snag some shots of the day.
Day 1: May 31
The day started early with a 4:45 wake up call in order to get everything ready and to be at the boat ramp by 5:45. Al says 6, but I like to be there early. This Week Brian’s wife Helen is fishing with us, she’s also trying to break a world record on for Tarpon on the fly, but hers is the women’s record on 12lb.
They arrive to the ramp a little after 6, we dump boat in the water and head off. What we are doing is what’s known as “Dawn Patrol”, this when you get to the taron flat just before the sunrise, andas the sunrises so do the tarpon. The early bird gets the worm, being up early my be a pain but it can pay off big time when it comes to Tarpon. The tarpon are just waking up and are rising to the surface, this when you can have a good chance of hooking a fish because they haven’t been thrown at by everyone and their mother yet. Unfortunately, today there just weren’t that many fish around. We fished well into the afternoon, about three or so, but only saw a few fish early this morning and just two schools out on the flats. Ever since Alberto came through and messed up the weather the fishing hasn’t been the same. Give it a fews days and a couple tides to freshen everything up and the fishing will be back to normal in no time.
